A little over two years ago, I started to record impactful moments and the meaningful things God has spoken to me. Yesterday, I flipped to the pages of this story…
February 20, 2016
Today, I went with Bibles for Costa Rica. I debated whether or not to go because last night I didn’t fall asleep until 2:30 or 3:00 am. I was super tired, but this morning I decided to go. I couldn’t help but feel like I could be doing better things, more restful thing, or something I enjoyed more.
I asked God to change my heart and attitude. I asked Him to give me rest and strength, energy and refreshment in the midst of ministry. I pictured the answer to my prayer as a cup of coffee and a nap on the drive there. Per usual, God had something different in mind.
Family after family, we made our way down the street, giving away the Bibles. To be completely honest, I didn’t really understand the significance of it all and was just bored and tired. We came to the next house and started the routine of it all once again. Little did I know, we were stepping onto a spiritual battleground. An elderly lady welcomed us into her home, wearing a towel on her head. We assumed she had just gotten out of the shower.
We asked her how we could pray for her. For the past 28 years, this woman, Julia, suffered great pain. Something was affecting her nerves. If the wind just blew her hair it was excruciating, hence the towel on her head. The whole right side of her face was in pain, and she could hardly chew. Back pain impaired her daily life. Unbearable affliction tormented her without a known cause nor cure.
Gathering around, we laid our hands on her and began to pray. I could feel power all around us and working through us. One guy in our group, Bjorn, was given a word of knowledge. Her back- there’s something wrong with two discs in her spine. We then learned this was true.
Doctors had been taking bone marrow from her back to see if they could figure out what was wrong with her. It came to a point that if they took anymore out for tests she would become paralyzed. She could only stand for five or ten minutes before the pain was too much to bare.
Again, we interceded, fully present in unity. We sang over her. We spoke forth truth. My heart burned, my hands shook, my eyes spilled over with tears. Finally, Lucy, from our group, told her to take the towel off her head- to lay down the old yoke she had been carrying. She did, and we continued to petition.
Freedom was coming. Healing was coming. We were on the edge of breakthrough, and we could feel it in our spirits.
Lucy placed her hand on Julia’s face after standing there praying for at least 15 min. We asked how she felt. Her face no longer hurt and she could once again stand without discomfort. Pain was no longer present and had been replaced with profound peace. She had such a calm come over her that she could barely get out the words. “Tranquila, tranquila.” She was halfway in heaven!
Bjorn, then asked to wash her feet. Shame washed over her, and she denied the offer. Bjorn explained, Jesus wanted to honor her in this way. With this understanding, she brought over a basin of water for her feet to be washed.
The towel that once represented shame and sickness was now the towel that dried her feet in honor and health.
Today, the Lord crowned his beloved, bestowing honor. He drove out that which tormented her. She was truly was delivered and it was the King’s joy to do this. As we got ready to leave, she told us that somebody once told her, two or three years ago, a witch probably put a curse on her and her family. Her mother had died with the sickness, and she was terrified to imagine her daughter would have to suffer the same. I think whoever said that was right, but we believe the curse is now broken. I prayed for coffee this morning and saw deliverance instead. Rest is found in God alone.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
“The objective of the Bibles for Costa Rica is to see the Word of God placed in every one of the 1.3 million homes in the nation of Costa Rica while ministering to the hearts of the people while leading them into a deeper relationship with the Living God.”
